When hunger strikes when you’re on the road, there’s only a small gap of time between getting food and getting hangry (hungry and angry). Sometimes you just need something to tide you over in-between meals, so a salad or healthy sandwich would be silly. Park your car on over at a 7-Eleven or your local convenience store for these smart, healthy on-the-go snacks all less than 250 calories.
If you can’t find a trail mix that is low in calories and fat, make your own by buying a small bag of your favorite nuts and bulk it up with popcorn. And if you’re really feeling daring, toss in some dried fruit.
Crudité or fresh fruit + String Cheese
The safest bet, you can usually find carrots/celery packaged together and loose fruit like bananas and apples or containers of fruit salad at most convenience stores. And who doesn’t love string cheese? A piece of fruit on its own may not satisfy you but the protein and small amount of fat in the string cheese will make it a complete snack.
You probably won’t find a selection like you would at the grocery store, but we’ll bet you can find a yogurt parfait. The one at 7-Eleven clocks in at 230 calories and 2.5 grams of fat, made with creamy Yoplait vanilla yogurt and topped with your choice of fresh strawberries and/or blueberries and a crunchy granola topping.
Be careful here, this can be unsafe territory for some people. A granola bar can seem innocent, but many are packed with sugar and preservatives. Look for granola bars that have less than 8 grams of sugar, at least 2-3 grams each of protein and fiber to keep you full, and no more than 250 calories. Read the ingredients list to figure out what’s in it! Typically the smaller the ingredients list, the better. Here’s a list of the best granola bars, grab one if you see one of these during your travels!
Those adorable little hummus packets that come with pita/pretzels are perfectly portion controlled. Chickpeas pack a power punch and this snack will feel like the closest thing to a real meal that you can get.
